Introducing the The Detox Slushie

HI all,

Yes, you heard me right. “Detox” and “Slushie” are meant to be together, it’s not a mistake! I guess if we can have a raw chocolate cake cheesecake or raw vanilla ice cream, then we can have a Detox Slushie! The latter puts the former raw desserts to shame too for health and nutritional benefits, for cleansing purposes and is really the lightest thing you can consume alongside water and green juices! Score, score and score!

I created this little baby a few days ago by chance when I was feeling the need for extra juice and lightness after a very long work day. I had already had a litre of green juice and made an extra 500ml which I had put into the freezer a few hours earlier. I figured I would just pull out the juice and defrost it fully and then enjoy. I grabbed a quick sip before putting it out to defrost and caught a bit of the ice. Only one though came to mind: slushie. Now I’ve had frozen juices many a time but something about this one just screamed slushie to me. I think it was the zesty tartness of this particular juice recipe combined with the fresh sweetness of the mint and the subtle depth from the basil. So with that little sip, the Detox Slushie was born! Here’s the recipe for you slushie lovers out there:

The Detox Slushie

2 cucumbers
4 large leaves of silverbeet
1 whole lemon (use 1.5 lemons like I did if they are small and you like tart flavours)
4 sprigs of fresh mint (you can add more or less according to your tastes)
8 basil leaves (you can add more or less according to your tastes)

You could also add 1 apple or 1 orange or some stevia drops if you like sweeter flavours. I loved mine without but if you are new to greener flavours, I suggest you add the sweetness.

Step 1: Juice all the ingredients and strain through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth to remove any residual pulp. Pour into a wide mouthed container and freeze for 1-2 hours until it’s about 1/2-2/3 frozen. Alternatively you can freeze the juice fully, and then take it out to defrost until it’s half liquid. Naturally the time it takes to freeze is completely dependent on your freezer settings, so it’s helpful to check how it’s progressing after an hour and then keep checking back every half hour to hour.

Step 2: Put your half frozen/half liquid juice into a blender for 5-20 seconds, dependent on how icy or liquid you like your slushies. My juice was only half frozen and I put it in the blender for 5 seconds only. It was enough to break down the large chunks of ice and distribute the flavours.

I was so pleased with this slushie. It felt completely different to having my daily green juice and really put a fun new spin on what I consider to be the most healthful food there is, green juice.

You could try this slushie with any combination of juiced fruits and vegetables. You could do an all fruit slushie, or a combination of vegetables and fruit like orange, grapefruit, cucumber, lemon, spinach and mint. You could even juice some berries into it for a pretty purple, pink or red slushie. The options are endless!

Move over convenience store, chemical, sugar and preservative-laden slushies, the Detox Slushie is in town!

Enjoy!

Love,
Casey
